Paediatric
Occupational Therapy

Paediatric Occupational Therapy can support children with participating in activities of daily living that are meaningful to them. For children, this can include play, fine and gross motor skill development, social skills, self-care skills (mealtimes, sleeping, toileting, dressing), learning and sensory processing.

At Light Coordination and Therapy Services, our Occupational Therapists provide relevant and evidence based therapy, supporting with a focus on child centred approaches, and working closely and holistically with children, parents and teachers, to develop skills, capacity, participation and inclusion for children and young people. This is usually done within the environments children participate in actively, including home, childcare, kindy and school. We can assist by supporting with the following services and more:

  • Fine motor skills – developing the small muscles of the hand, wrist and fingers; used for drawing, handwriting, cutting, craft, eating, dressing and hand manipulation. This is done through teaching correct finger grasps, practicing use of dominant hand, and learning to use utensils correctly.
  • Gross motor skills – developing control of the body for play, including with strength, balance, coordination, posture, planning and ball skills.
  • Play Skills – learning about structured and unstructured play, including focusing on cooperation and developing imaginary play skills.
  • Self-care – Learning to organise belongings, participate in daily self-care activities, routine development.
  • Social skills – learning to play with others, engage and initiate play.
  • Sensory Processing – learning about the way in which young people receive information from the outside world, making sense of this, and supporting children in accessing their sensory preferences and minimising their exposure to sensory aversions.
